The party had come to the cavern at the end of a twisting tunnel off of the main tunnel where the hobwoses were hiding. They cannot be in the Grotto of the Guardians because of the large number of undead and necromancers. They were discussing the situation with the chieftain, chieftainesse, and Bunette, their daughter. Suddenly, alarms sounded loudly. Hobwoses emerged from tents and put down their work with those brave enough and skilled enough came forward to fight. The entrance was suddenly filled with two necromancers and a troop of undead. Many shots were fired at the undead from the hobwoses.
Kutaku and Woofie hurled themselves at the invaders, instantly taking out one of the necromancers. The zombies moved to him to surround him and take him down.
Justice strutted forward through the fray with no concern of the combat happening around him. Once there, he stopped and announced loudly, "JUSTICE... LIGHTBRINGERRRRR!!!" With a hoo-hoo-ha, he pointed his hammer at them, destroying three.
Rose snuck up, ducking behind tents, until she reached a vantage point. Taking careful aim, her first shot hit its target. The second target veered off and went into the leg of one of the hobwoses.
Adarra, seeing this, rushed from the chieftains' tent and went to the hobwose's aid.
Jax reacted by coming to Kutaku's aid, being surrounded as he was by zombies. As he watched, Kutaku was hit by three magic missiles coming from the necromancer.
Kutaku and Woofie wheeled, realigning themselves with the back row of zombies and trampling all three, ending the charge with a trident thrust into the necromancer, who fell dead. And not long after that, they zombies were dead, as well.
They gathered after the fight. Kutaku regaled them with a moving speech on his desire for their aid to fight against the Temple of Behamut. Unmoved, he was answered from the back of the group, "we can see what we can do."
The group gathered around Bunette and she introduced them to the hobwoses that would be able to accompany them: Meril, Fordoc - Sargeant of the Guard, Sipho - a wizard, and largest of the halflings, appearing more dwarven, was Larry.
Bunette asked Meril to seek down the tunnel, scout ahead for any trouble and the rest would follow soon after. Rose insisted on going with him, which Meril refused. She did not take "no" for an answer and came anyway. Meril asked her if she had lowlight vision, but she did not, so she brought out a glowing stone from her bosom. Meril stated, you are going to get us killed with that. You should return to the cavern. As she argued against it, Meril attempted to jog down the tunnel away from her, but she just followed. Finally he said, fine, let's go back. They returned to the cavern, but once inside, Rose asked Kutaku to bar the way and slipped back into the tunnels.
She went down the tunnels, marking her way as she went. She got turned around a couple of times. Adarra asked Kutaku to let her pass. Adarra went into the tunnel and began screaming for Rose. They eventually met up, but then were also confronted by a patrol of four zombies and two necromancers, who immediately hit them with magic missiles. They fought against the zombies and necromancers, Adarra turning Rose invisible to the undead, Rose performing sneak attacks. Chanting came from the necromancers a second time, and next thing they know, Rose and Adarra are running for their lives, terrified beyond all reason. Kutaku caught up with them, worried about their safety. He and Woofie joined in the fight. They fought long and hard against the zombies. As Jax found them following the shouting, he heard more chanting, and the necromancers cast coruscating rays toward them, missing their targets and dissipating. He returned with a volley of magic missiles, striking his target. They soon realized that one of the necromancers was dead, the other was not to be seen, and reasoned he ran back up the tunnel. Adarra instantly chased after him, caught up with him, actually passed him, and came to stop in front of him. The necromancer replied by summoning a monstrous scorpion. She cast Hold Person on him and subdued the scorpion with a peace spell. In the end, they all caught up with her. Rose came around the corner to see the necromancer on top of Adarra's shoulders, who they were saving for questioning. Two shots from her bow, and the necromancer lie dead on her shoulder.
The battle over, they paused to take a breath and re-assess their situation.
